Intentional Eating with PCOS
Do you eat when you're stressed?
Do you eat when you're bored?
Do you eat when you're sad?
We occasionally eat when we're not exactly hungry. The problem lies when it becomes a habit. On top of that, chances are that when we mindlessly eat, the foods we choose aren't exactly helping our PCOS symptoms! Mindlessly snacking on pretzels, chips, and candy leave us feeling unsatisfied. Not only do these foods spike our insulin (which is what we try to avoid), but the calories easily add up which may be contributing to your stubborn extra weight. Becoming in tune with your hunger & fullness cues will help you learn to trust your appetite and self-regulate.
Here are some tips:
- Check to see if you're just thirsty instead of hungry (thirst may be disguised as hunger)
- If you are actually hungry, pick something nutritious first
- If you're still craving something less healthy, take a moment to assess your emotions
- If it turns out you are just bored, stressed, or tired, consider a power nap or a cup of tea, even going for a short walk
- If none of these strategies suffice, go ahead and intentionally savor each bite of your treat!!
